Characterizing home networks with HomeNet Profiler
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents the first large-scale study of home networks. We design HomeNet Profiler, a tool that runs on an end-host in the home to collect data from home networks. HomeNet Profiler collects a wide range of measurements including: the set of devices, the set of services (with UPnP and Zeroconf), the home gateway configuration, and the characteristics of the WiFi environment. Since the release of HomeNet Profiler in April 2011, we have collected data on 1191 distinct homes. Our analysis leads to a number of insights on current home networks. Home networks are diverse; some home networks connect just one end device, whereas others have more than a dozen. In most home networks, however, only a small fraction of devices are powered on during our measurements. The support for UPnP and Zeroconf is still limited. We observe significant differences among the WiFi neighborhoods (i.e., the WiFi networks around a home) in different countries. The signal strength of in-home WiFi, however, is surprisingly good independently of geography.

Measuring Home Networks with HomeNet Profiler
This paper designs HomeNet Profiler, a software that runs on any computer connected inside a home network, to collect a wide range of measurements about home networks including the set of devices, the set of services (with UPnP and Zeroconf), and the characteristics of the WiFi environment. To attract a larger number of users, HomeNet Profiler runs one-shot measurements upon user demand. We val...
متن کاملProbe and Pray: Using UPnP for Home Network Measurements
Network measurement practitioners increasingly focus their interest on understanding and debugging home networks. The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology holds promise as a highly efficient way to collect and leverage measurement data and configuration settings available from UPnP-enabled devices found in home networks. Unfortunately, UPnP proves less available and reliable than one would...
متن کاملAn empirical analysis of web site stickiness
Even though we have seen an exponential growth in the number of Web sites and the number of users, little is known about Web usage at the level of the individual. This paper aims to overcome this lack of knowledge on individual usage patterns. Based on previous findings on saturation of Web usage, we use data from 1995-1998 on residential Web usage conducted as part of the HomeNet project to ex...
متن کاملThe impact of computer use on children's and adolescents' development
In recent years, electronic games, home computers, and the Internet have assumed an important place in our lives. This paper presents a review of the research on the impact of home computer use on the development of children and adolescents. Time use data are presented along with a discussion of factors such as age, gender, and ethnicity, which impact the time spent on computers as well as the ...
